'Community moorings' plan

The Canal & River Trust is developing plans to offer roving permits for 'community moorings' to boaters without a home mooring who are reluctant to move more than a short distance in 'hot spot' areas where the large number of such boaters is seen as putting pressure on towpath mooring space. Although any boat without a home mooring is required by law to 'continuously cruise', CRT surveys show there are approximately 2,000 such craft which never move more than six miles - many on the Lower River Lee and Kennet & Avon. However, many owners say they would take a home mooring if suitable ones were available.
