Tightening one's belt

Q My boat is powered by a 1994 Lister LPW/S3 heat exchanger-cooled diesel. The engine drives a single standard alternator that looks original. Alternator drive is by multi groove V belt of the correct spec. When I start the engine, the alternator belt immediately starts to slip and squeal noisily. The noise disappears after about 10-20 seconds but, if the engine is restarted, it happens again. I also get the squeal when the batteries are under heavy load.
