An alternative method

We have just read Steve Haywood's article re locking up (CB, March). However, we do not agree. We have to go through six big locks to get anywhere from Chester and we drive into the lock, stay at the back, rope the boat around the bollards, open the paddles and bingo, perfectly safe. That is what the bollards are there for, no revving the engine and no moving about. We often share a lock and people rev their engine backwards and forwards, smoke everywhere, open the paddles bit by bit, and we just sit relaxing. If we go to the front in these locks, as in many single locks, the bow would be in a waterfall, flooding the boat.
