Following british boaters being fined for arriving in other EU countries with low-duty 'red' diesel in their tanks (even though they had paid the extra duty on it), the British Government is banning boats leaving UK waters from using such fuel - but will still allow it on inland waterways. Private pleasure craft in Britain were permitted to use red diesel for propulsion until the EU derogation allowing this ended in 2008. Rather than requiring boats to use 'white' road diesel (DERV) from then on, the Government implemented the required changes by permitting boats to continue using red, but only if they made a declaration and paid the extra duty on the proportion of the fuel used for propulsion.
