How do we turn an empty shell into a fully fitted out narrowboat? We had taken on a huge project and we needed a plan. The most basic 'sailaway' includes just the steelwork and the engine. We'd cheated a little and asked the builders to include the windows, ballast, floorboards, battens and sprayfoam insulation, to give us a bit of a head start. The very first job was to make two sets of temporary steps - it is a surprisingly big drop to get into the boat, particularly at the stern, and we had no wish to break our legs.
