Where does the money come from?

One of the biggest questions with the formation of the Canal & River Trust was how much extra on top of the government grant would it be able to bring in to bolster sorely needed income for the waterways. So with the new organisation now settling down, are the finances starting to look up, or is it still 'business as usual'? In recent years the bulk of BW's cash for the waterways came from four main areas - the government grant, boat licensing and mooring, property revenue and utility income. Those four still represent the lion's share, but are joined by 'charitable' and 'enterprise' funding. The simplest to deal with is the government grant, because it was set up in a fixed contract that will last for the Trust's first 15 years. At ￡39.5m annually the first years will be tight, but in 2015-6 an extra ￡10m kicks in for ten years.
