Electrical problems feature three times in a list of the top five canal boat breakdowns compiled by boat insurance provider Towergate and marine breakdown callout specialist River Canal Rescue. The top five has been used as the basis for a guide to avoiding the most common problems, which has been published online on Towergate and RCR's websites. At Number One with 21 percent of all callouts is batteries and electrical malfunctions - and the key problem areas identified include misunderstandings about battery types, loose battery terminals or other connections, and topping-up batteries. A close second with 18 percent is fuel and contamination issues such as diesel bug, dirt in tanks, and blocked filters. Breaking cables comes third; closely followed by overheating and cooling issues such as airlocks and hose problems; completing the top five is alternator issues often resulting from inadequate winterising.
