Waterway maintenance functions on the Canal & River Trust's navigations are to be brought under the control of a central team, leaving the 11 regional Waterway Units to concentrate on customer service, volunteering and day-to-day operations. This is the first organisational change since CRT took over from British Waterways two years ago, and the first for many years that's been internally led rather than as a result of external influences (such as Government funding cuts). CRT told Canal Boat that the change was largely a result of the existing regional structure (originally set up to focus primarily on operations) having taken on increasing work with the setting up of the Local Partnerships to work with local authorities and communities.
