We ended the first part of the journey at Warwick on the Saltisford Arm which was once the terminus of the Warwick and Birmingham Canal. This became part of the Grand Union Canal after amalgamation with several other waterways in 1929. The arm is now used for moorings and is probably the best place to stop and explore the ancient town of Warwick with its splendid castle (see inset). Leaving Warwick you are soon faced with 21 wide locks on the Hatton Flight. Assuming you're in a narrow beam boat, try to share with another boat and enjoy the scenery as the locks rise through very pleasant countryside with views back to Warwick.
