In early summer 2003, Canal Boat (as it happens, the last issue before I joined) reported the reopening of Aston Locks on the Montgomery -extending navigation at the English end to seven miles from Frankton Junction to Gronwen Bridge beyond Maesbury.And here I am, a wizened old veteran of 11 years' service - and still the navigable Monty ends at Gronwen. Sure, the next half mile to Redwith has been restored for some time, and a further quarter mile has just been re-watered. But at this rate, how long before it gets to the border at Llanymynech, let alone to the glorious scenery of the Welsh length through Welshpool to Newtown?
