Jason Leach nails his colours to the mast straight away - "Canals are good; more canals must be better," says the head of the Canal & River Trust's restoration team with a smile. CRT's predecessor British Waterways had latterly concentrated its limited funds on the maintenance of the existing network, with little left over to support reopening of further routes. But there have been some signs of a change following the transfer to a charity. One or two veteran canal restorers listening to Jason explaining his plan appear sceptical, though. Looking back, you can see why.
