"We've created this. Now what's our ambition?" That's Richard Parry's opening line. He's referring to the setting up of the Canal & River Trust charity in 2012 to take over the waterways network from the nationalised British Waterways - and having joined CRT as its Chief Executive in May 2013, he's launching its strategy for the next decade. "Do we sit back," he continues, "and spend it as 'BW Mark Two', then get to 2027 and find that the world has changed? No." That 2027 date might seem a long way off, but it is important: it's when the 15-year government funding contract expires. So in ten years' time, the waterways will need to be in a good position regarding funding beyond that date - and that's what's driving a lot of the plans now. The published strategy divides into six parts: Waterways; Places; Prosperity; People; Influence; Resources and each has 'strategic goals' - 500 miles of canal adoptions; one million volunteer hours; 85 percent boater satisfaction. We're interested in getting Mr Parry to flesh out the detail.
