This might look like some weird throwback to the days before locks had ladders installed in them, and single-handed narrowboating was reputed to be rather more exciting. But, in fact, it's some of the 80 elite athletes who took part in the inaugural Neptune Steps Challenge on the Forth & Clyde Canal's Maryhill Locks. Billed as one of the toughest swimming races in the UK, the competitors had to take on a 420m sprint-swim up the closely-spaced flight in the heart of Glasgow. Eventually, local man Mark Deans emerged victorious, beating swimmers from as far afield as Sweden and France.
