£40 fee hits north-west through-route

Boats visiting the Bridgewater Canal from the Canal & River Trust system must now pay £40 If they return to the canal again within a month - following unilateral changes to reciprocal arrangements implemented without consultation by the Bridgewater Canal Company. Until now, the only limit on CRT licensed craft visiting the Bridgewater (which for historic reasons is owned by a subsidiary of Peel Ports, owner of the Manchester Ship Canal) has been that they cannot stay for more than seven days at a time without buying a Bridgewater licence. In return, Bridgewater licensed craft can cruise nearby lengths of CRT canals - the Trent & Mersey north of Harecastle; the Middlewich Arm; the Leeds & Liverpool from Leigh to Blackburn and Liverpool; and the Liverpool Link - subject to a similar seven-day rule.
