The rather straggly plant of Herb Bennet with its unassuming yellow flowers gives no hint of its supposed powers over evil. According to a late 15th century text, "Where the root is in the house, Satan can do nothing and flies from it, wherefore it is blessed before all other herbs, and if a man carries a root about him no venomous beast can harm him".
