Vix Wilding, Operations Manager of the Friends of the Cromford Canal's trip-boat Birdswood, is pictured cutting a cake in the shape of the boat to mark the exact 8oth anniversary of Birdswood being launched.Birdswood was built in 1938 by Yarwoods of Northwich for the London Midland & Scottish Railway as an unpowered open boat with no cabin, and used for short distance trade in theBirmingham area, before being fitted with a cabin in the 1950s and working as a butty, towed by a motor on longer-distance trips. Five years ago, having previously operated as a trip-boat on the Caldon Canal, Birdswood moved to a new home on the Cromford Canal to run trips from Cromford Wharf on the isolatedrestored northern length of the canal.
