Almost 70 volunteers from all over Britain - plus one from Germany - converged on the Lichfield Canal for a weekend in early November as Waterway Recovery Group held its 'Bonfire Bash' major working party. Organised as an annual reunion for the WRG volunteers, the event (hosted by a different site every year) takes its name from the scrub-clearance and bonfires which usually form much of WRG's work at this time of season. But this year was different: although there was some vegetation clearance and more specialised tree surgery for WRG's trained Forestry Team, for a change there was a considerable amount of construction work. The WRGies made a great deal of progress on building a towpath wall at Fosseway Heath (which was the subject of a summer canal camp - see our Restoration Feature in the October issue) and also on surfacing the new towpath.
