摘要

Outdoor hearths where whole families once camped to make charcoal for local factories; stream bottom pebbles collected for the tin ore they contained; the site of a gruesome murder in 1837, and the aptly-named Coffin Walk along which the dead were once carried... all can be found on Woodland Trust land, together with a plethora of plants and animals, both common and rare. Founded in 1972, the Woodland Trust owns well over 1000 sites in the UK together covering an area of some 45,000 acres. The charity, which describes itself as the RSPCA of trees, buys or is given woods. Many of its 'reserves' are associated with water: some have a stream running through them, while others are bounded by a river or canal.
