Some few years ago, during what I shall always refer to as one of the Inland Waterways Association's National Rallies of Boats, I was appalled and saddened to hear a clearly enthusiastic and well travelled participant ask: "And who was Robert Aickman, whose Challenge Trophy is being awarded for the most meritorious journey to this event?" I resolved then to make an effort to rectify this startling lack of knowledge. This is my attempt to record the life of the founder of the Inland Waterways Association, a visionary without whose campaign we would, quite literally, be unable to use the waterways today. A single article can never do justice to this subject ― I am being brave to even try to tell the story in less than a full-length book. There are some who would say that I am brave to try to tell it at all!
