Cruising the K&A

The K&A was reopened in 1990, after an epic 40-year struggle to save this historic waterway linking the east and west coasts of England. But even when the canal had been officially opened, it could be tough going to traverse it, with many leaking gates, and heavy, worn-out lock gear. Shallow pounds and bottom leaks made some sections painfully slow, and the lack of reliable water supplies meant that several of the major flights could not be passed in dry conditions.
