摘要

Anyone who ventures forth regularly on Britain's network of canals and rivers cannot fail to notice at least some of the commoner bank-side birds. Among the avian wonders on view are the ubiquitous, stork-like grey heron, the brightly-coloured, exotic-looking kingfisher, the tail-bobbing grey wagtail, the gleaming white mute swan and, in summer, the water-skimming swallow. Every year a small army of keen birdwatchers, working voluntarily under the auspices of The British Trust for Omithology (BTO), spends hours 'in the field' counting and monitoring both resident and migratory birds.
