Imagine a waterway running through attractive scenery, where ship-sized locks are still worked manually by keepers, where huge swingbridges rarely move because most boats can easily slip under them, and where the signs of departed commercial traffic are visible everywhere. A waterway that is also at one end of the network's most eagerly visited locations - the Anderton Boat Lift. In mid-summer, the River Weaver ought to be chock-full of boats but what we found after we had descended the Lift was a river so quiet that we never once found ourselves even sharing a lock.
