BW SHOULD BE SOLD OFF, SAYS ADAM SMITH

Right-wing think tank the Adam Smith Institute has come out in favour of the Government selling- off British Waterways. Although both BW and Defra have recently stated that a sell-off is not on the agenda, the Institute's report Privatisation: Reviving the Momentum identifies BW as one of 17 organisations that it believes should be privatised. 'The adoption of more commercial techniques by British Waterways would be enhanced if there were a target date for some form of privatisation, which would help raise the considerable funds needed to restore the worst parts of the inland waterways network. A five-year plan to turn around its finances might well enable BW to generate real interest amongst potential investors. In particular, its waterside assets would be expected to generate considerable value.'
