It's a crisp bright day in late winter at Govilon. Despite the country's not entirely undeserved reputation for wet weather, the canal's course along the South Wales valley side is bathed in bright sunshine. It would be a brilliant day to be out on the water. That is, if there was any water to be out on... But sadly this is the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, where a breach in October sent millions of gallons of water and 36,000 tons of mud cascading down the hillside, damaging houses and blocking the A4077 road. Since then, over 16 miles of what many believe Britain's most beautiful canal have been drained. With a trickle of muddy water in its bed, the canal has been reduced to a lifeless ditch.
