The friends of the cromford Canal have received planning permission to reinstate over a mile at the top end of the Pinxton Arm of the canal, almost two years after the application was first submitted. Most of this length was lost to the former Smotherfly opencast mining site. The River Erewash was diverted during mining; once coal extraction finished the plan was to return it to its original course and to infill the diversionary route.
