THE PRICE OF SUCCESS GREATER GHG EMISSIONS TIED TO MARKET GAINS IN TRANSPORTATION

Canada's freight sector has grown considerably over the past two decades. Total freight moved, in tonne-kilometres, increased by 54% from 1990 to 2010. Total freight moved by truck has shown particularly strong growth, increasing by 166% over that period. But there has been a price to pay for that success and that has come through a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions. GHG emissions from the freight sector have increased 70% between 1990 and 2010. Interestingly, trucking, which is the most often used mode, has actually improved its energy efficiency per tonne-kilometre by 25% over that time period but these efficiency improvements have not been enough to offset the emissions produced from the rapid growth in demand for the movement of goods. The accompanying tables, provided by Transport Canada, show a snapshot of energy use and GHG emissions by industry and mode.
