As marketers strive to separate their products and advertising from their competitors' offerings, commercial printers have watched demand for coated printing climb. Market forces demand, now more than ever, coated and/or high gloss printed products that not only visually stand out from the competition, but that are durable and resistant to scratches, scuffs, and scrapes. Surface finishing effects such as matte-gloss or spot coatings are also in the spotlight as buyers seek to add value through enhanced quality and creativity. Although the once-dominant varnish process has lost favour to aqueous and UV coatings, each process has its benefits, ideally suited applications and different price points (see coatings primer sidebar next page).
