Extraction Empire: Undermining the Systems, States, and Scales of Canada’s Global Resource Empire, 2017-1217

In this book, Pierre Belanger explores Canada’s extraction economy, and primarily its minerals extraction, arguing that this industry is definitive of the country’s modern history. Extraction is identified with a range of abuses including violence to persons, communities, and habitats, and above all to Indigenous peoples. The Front Matter stresses how over half the world’s mining operations are Canadian-owned, operated, or equipped. Two-thirds have headquarters in Canada, thanks to favourable trading conditions. The study aims to show that, mainly through extraction, “Canada is the supreme outcome of an age of territorial discovery and land dispossession initiated across the non-European world … [in which] the Christian Church bureaucratically sanctioned theft and enslavement of African, as well as violence and extermination of indigenous peoples, across lines of the non-Christian world” (p. 25).
