Today's marketplace is obliging organizations to look for improve-ment in all business management programs, while competition is striving to make these organizations create more favourable interactions with the environment. Increasing interest in sustainability and ISO 14001 certification are also contributing to better environmental protection through source reduction. Accordingly, the new trend of environmental design is based on pollution prevention rather than pollution control. Numerous research studies are increasingly focussed on developing more accurate air monitoring techniques as well as new processes not only for better air emission control, but also for pollution reduction through material substitution, process modification and energy recovery. The impact of this trend will necessarily result in significant reduction of a variety of air pollutants that have contributed to major environmental problems. As examples, climate change, the greenhouse effect, and ozone layer depletion are perturbations resulting from the presence of certain anthropogenic gaseous compounds in the atmosphere. Such chemicals need to be better studied, controlled and monitored.
