The Role of the Engineer in the 21st Century

The origins of engineering can be traced back several centuries to military operations where the engineer was defined as one who designed and constructed military works for attack and defence. Even farther back, ancient civilizations recorded that bridge and hydraulic 'architects' constructed works for the protection of society. Only later did the term 'engineer' emerge and become primarily associated with those that designed buildings.
