Sustainable infrastructure requires taking the long-term view

The planning and design of civil infrastructure must consider the long term aspects, not only in regards to life-cycle costing of the project, but also the potential future needs. This long-term approach is evident in the Tower Bridge in London, England and Victoria Bridge, in Montreal - two examples of civil infrastructure that meet the needs of the 21st century but were planned, designed and constructed in the 19th century. Conversely, it could be argued that the 20th-century designers of the Champlain Bridge in Montreal were not forward thinking in anticipation of the potential growth of commuter vehicle crossings of the St. Lawrence River.
