While analysts of production systems have benefited from their close attention to actual practice, they have tended to urge each new approach to manufacturing management as a panacea, at leasr until the next new method gains status. However, manu- facturing managers need to consider each advocated technique in the context of their firm's overall business strategy. They have to integrate the principles of their function with business-level strategy concepts such as generic strategies and core competencies.
