Craig R. Barrett, CEO of Intel Corp. since May, 1998, is as cool as his predecessor Andrew S. Grove was hot. But dont let Barrett's placid mien fool you: He's as tough as they come, with a biting wit. Trained as a metallurgist, Barrett quit his job as a Stanford University engineering professor to join Intel in 1974. He rose to the top on his operations talent—Barrett is credited with turning Intel into a nonpareil manufacturer—but in the past two years, he has been moving into the role of visionary-in-chief.
