It's a weird way to say "welcome," even by Silicon Valley standards. Soon after Arthur Havers joined online brokerage E~*Trade Group Inc. as vice-president for international business development, Chief Executive Officer Christos M. Cotsakos subjected him—as he does every new hire—to the company's initiation rites. At one of Havers' first staff meetings, Cotsakos asked him to stand on a chair and reveal something about himself to more than 40 people who were watching. For a moment, Havers, who describes himself as a "proper" Englishman who shuns the spotlight, felt his mind go blank. But then he did something completely out of character: He pulled out a penknife and sliced off the expensive Hermes tie that he was wearing.
