SOME KIDS, FROM THE very start, believe they are destined for greatness. Alan R. Mulally was one of them. As a lad in Lawrence, Kan., he sat in the front pew at church, the better to study how the minister revved up the congregation. When he was 17, Mulally considered President John F. Kennedy's call to send Americans to the moon a personal message for him. "I got in front of the TV and said 'I'm ready,'" Mulally once recalled in an interview with BusinessWeek. He signed up for extra classes in science, math, and chemistry. He even took flying lessons.
