A merican drivers have a lot to distract them these days: historic levels of manufacturer recalls; increased traf-fic brought about in part by historically low fuel costs; and enough potholes from a record-cold winter to sink a fleet-or a fleet manager. For many managers of fleets of vehicles-from corporate cars and delivery vans to ambulances-the issues are multiplied several thousand times over, and compounded by government regulations and global competition. "The average U.S. fleet manager manages about 2,200 vehicles," says Phillip E. Russo, CAE, CEO of NAFA Fleet Management Association, which provides classes, seminars, certification programs and networking for its more than 3,000 members. Despite the dramatic slide in prices at the pump, fuel costs remain the top concern for fleet managers. "When we talk about cost-cutting, that's the first number," Russo adds. "Everyone's looking at how to spend less."
