Qualcomm Inc., the leading maker of phone chips, is preparing to fend off a $105 billion takeover attempt by rival chipmaker Broadcom Ltd., according to people familiar with Qualcomm's plans. The bid represents a 28 percent premium over Qualcomm's value before Bloomberg broke the news of the offer on Nov. 2. It would also be the biggest acquisition in Silicon Valley history, dwarfing the $67 billion Dell Inc. paid for EMC Corp. two years ago.
