Considering the challenges of 2020, many of the books that business leaders recommended this year aren't necessarily business books at all-or even from this year. Erik Larson's epic retelling of the 1940 Blitz, The Splendid and the Vile, was a popular choice. "Somehow, Winston Churchill retained relentless optimism in the face of these insurmountable odds," says Jonathan Gray, president and chief operating officer of Blackstone Group Inc. He calls it "a powerful lesson for the challenges of 2020."
