Among the lightning protection arrows in a flight crew's quiver are onboard detection (or inferring) avionics, including the following: L3 Aviation Products Stormscope. As mentioned in the main text, Paul Ryan's Stormscope brought onboard lightning detection to general aviation aircraft 42 years ago. Ryan later sold the self-contained panel-mounted "spheric" device to 3M Company, and in ensuing years, the product passed to BF Goodrich Aerospace and finally to L3 Aviation Products.
