Increasingly, business aircraft operators make new technologies buy their way onto their aircraft. Combined visions systems (CVSes), ones that offer both a synthetic vision guidance system (SVGS) using a digital database and an enhanced flight vision system (EFVS) using infrared and visible light sensors, have potential to deliver that cost benefit. Rockwell Collins, along with Dassault and others, is developing CVS equipment that could enable flight crews to fly below published instrument approach minimums down to 150 ft. height above terrain (HAT), on any instrument approach that has vertical guidance, using an SVGS. At that point, pilots could use an EFVS for a close-in look to continue the approach to touchdown and rollout in accordance with new FAR Part 91.176(a). The combined capability thus would enable more EFVS weather penetration approaches to landing than if the transition to the visual segment were at published approach minimums.
