Do today's buses need to shed weight?

The editor has invited me to contribute a piece to mark my 80th birthday, which occurred in March. This is no longer all that big a deal, yet it still came as a shock to realise I've been hooked on buses for nearly 70 years, beginning when I first travelled to school that way in the autumn of 1936. The brisk performance and distinctive sound of petrol-engined Newcastle Corporation AEC Regents first caught my attention. The seed so planted influenced the course of my whole life, and I'm still hooked today.
