As a schoolboy in the rhymney and Taff valleys, I assumed local authorities operated bus services everywhere. My home village, Machen, was on the joint Rhymney Valley District Council and Western Welsh (later National Welsh) route between Newport and Merthyr Tydfil. The valleys either side were home to Taff-Ely (Pontypridd until 1974) and Islwyn (previously West Mon) buses. The nearest large settlements were dominated by Cardiff Bus and Newport Transport.
