Founded: 1972, when Eric (Joseph) Holt started a one-coach business while still employed by British Steel. On leaving school in 1949, joined Enterprise Passenger Services of Scunthorpe a year before the 150-vehicle company was sold to the British Transport Commission to become the larger part of Lincolnshire Road Car. He completed his apprenticeship as an electrician, then left to join the steel industry in 1959 and kept that day job until 1974. Although J. Holt & Son featured on coach rears, the company traded as Sweyne Coaches to avoid confusion with other Holt's coach companies in the region. The name Sweyne derives from the name of the Viking chieftain, who sailed his longship on the River Ouse.
