Seattlelooks set to buy a completely new trolleybus fleet for its 14-route system — one of only five in the United States — in 2014/15, favouring them over diesel-electric hybrids. In contrast, the small Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds will use hybrids to abandon its three-route trolleybus system by 2014. In Seattle, King County Metro has evaluated options for replacing its 159 trolleybuses, which operate 70 route miles (some in city centre transit tunnel) and carry around 20% of all its public transport passengers. It says the vehicles are reaching the end of their useful lives, requiring heavy repairs and no manufacturer support is available for their propulsion systems.
