As we approach the 25th anniversary of bus deregulation, something significant is changing one of its byproducts. The operating industry- in its widest sense, including the nation's biggest tendering authority-is increasingly assertive about the sorts of buses it wants. Back in 1986, bespoke buses were frowned upon. They was seen as an unnecessary indulgence of the Ancien Regime, people whose sole focus was deemed to be on attracting passengers on to their buses instead behaving like frustrated vehicle designers, specifying features it seemed that they- and they alone - thought essential.
