The Short Hops section of In London last month reported that some of the planned increases in London fares had been reduced as a result of a government grant to Transport for London. The cuts to Bus Service Operators Grant, compensation for concessionary fares and support for social services, coupled with rising costs, make it extremely difficult for provincial operators to avoid fares increases. Can we expect the government to be as generous to the rest of the country as it has been to London? We all probably know the answer.
