The Channel island of Jersey lies 14miles off the French mainland and lOOmiles from the English coast. This creates a bit of an identity crisis. Jersey wants to be English, although the majority of its street names are French, but it would prefer to have the Englishness of a bygone age, hence the retention of the pound note and a severe restriction on who is allowed to live and work on the island. Even its bus service is a slight oddity, operated as it is by the HCT Group, whose principal credential is community transport. However its subsidiary Libertybus does it rather well. A modern 90-bus fleet, a third of which are Optare Solos, provides a comprehensive network throughout the island seven days a week, which is enhanced during the summer but is still, as I found out, pretty regular during the winter.
