Regardless of who wins the election for a new Mayor of London in May, it seems certain that production of the Wright New Routemaster will end with delivery of the 1,000th vehicle later this year. Its spirit, however, is destined to go on and could become a familiar sight in other British - maybe even overseas - cities on lookahke products. That is thanks to outgoing mayor Boris Johnson's determination over a year ago to challenge the builders of all of London's double-deckers to incorporate the look - the DNA is how Transport for London describes it - of the three-door, twin-staircase New Routemaster on the busiest routes into the two-door, single-staircase vehicles operated widely across the rest of the network. Alexander Dennis, thwarted six years earlier in its bid to build the real thing, was first out of the starting blocks with the Enviro400H City unveiled at Coach & Bus Live last September.
