Possible meanings of the DMS type code

I was interested to read of Matthew Wharmby's new book The London DMS (Reviews, April) and in particular the last paragraph stating that the author 'has no more idea than the rest of us about what those letters actually stood for'. For what it is worth, during my time with London Transport in the 1980s, I was led to believe that it was originally intended to have stood for Daimler Multi Standee, references to the manufacturer and the vehicle's capacity, with a standee area for heavy loadings during the operating peaks.
