Iwas a pimply pre-pubescent prep-school boy, living in Brighton. My family had moved there from Shepperton — later the home for many years of Buses Illustrated/Buses — in the wake of disastrous floods of 1947, which had a damaging effect on my mother's health and doctors recommended Brighton, with its bracing sea air and quaint trolleybuses, which had only two axles; all trolleybuses of my then acquaintance sported three axles. Looking back through rose-tinted but cracked-by-age lenses, 1949 was an eventful year, especially as the magazine appeared. Yes, exactly 70-years ago, Buses Illustrated was first published by Ian Allan, a companion to that company's established Trains Illustrated. My late brother subscribed to TI and it was in that magazine that he read of the forthcoming BI, and informed me accordingly.
